Mar Menor means the ‘Minor sea’, compared to the Mediterranean Sea, known as the ‘Larger Sea’ (Mar Mayor). Mar Menor is a coastal saltwater lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula located south-east of Murcia, Spain and is close to Cartagena.
Four municipalities lie by the Mar Menor: Cartagena, Los Alcázares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar. It comprises an area of nearly 170 km2, a coastal length of 70 km with beautiful warm and clear water no more than 7 metres in depth. It’s the largest lagoon in Spain.
The lagoon is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by La Manga («the sleeve», in Spanish), a sandbar 22 km in length whose width ranges from 100 to 1,200 metres, with Cape Palos in its south-eastern spur, completing the lagoon’s rough triangular shape.
Mar Menor also plays host to the internationally reknowned La Manga Club, just 20 minutes drive from Murcia-San Javier airport or an hour from Alicante. Boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year, not to mention top-notch professional training facilities, it’s hardly surprising it’s classed as one of the best sports and leisure destinations in the world; and it has the celebrity clientele to match. The guest list reads like a who’s who of sports and showbiz greats – with everyone from Sean Connery to Sir Cliff Richard, Matt Damon to David Beckham jetting over for a bit of active R&R.
